What is CBD? | CBD Market Size & Growth UK | CBD Food Supplement

Over the last year, it is reported that 6 million people in the UK have tried CBD and that there are currently an estimated 1.6 million regular users of CBD in the UK – this number is only growing. Within the CBD market, the most popular product is CBD oil. It’s easy to consume and comes in a variety of flavour’s and strengths.

CBD is one of the 113 identified cannabinoids that exist within the cannabis sativa (hemp) plant and accounts for approximately 40% of the plant’s extracts. It’s a naturally occurring compound that is extracted from the hemp plant and added to products such as oils, balms and edible products.

The advantage that CBD possesses over other cannabis products is that is contains trace to zero levels of THC and so is not psychoactive – it can therefore be purchased legally as a food supplement in the UK.

The human body contains an endocannabinoid system which responds to endogenous cannabinoids produced in the body, but research now suggests that it also responds to external cannabinoids like CBD. It indirectly impacts the system by activating receptors which are responsible for controlling important functions such as pain perception and inflammation.

Although there has been some uncertainty around CBD regulation, as we look ahead it is likely to become more regulated. By March 2021, CBD manufacturers based in the EU will need to obtain approval for their products to be sold in the ‘Novel foods’ category, to help protect consumers and ensure the quality of products sold. Novel foods are foods which have not been widely consumed in the UK or EU before May 1997, and that have been marketed as consumable products.
